Bir Efsanenin Peşinde : Uçak Kuyruk İzleri - Chasing a Myth: Aircraft’s Contrails
Çocukluğumda kulaktan dolma bir bilgi ile gökyüzündeki uçak kuyruk izlerinin meteoroloji uçakları tarafından hava durumunu ölçmek için bırakıldığını duymuş ve bilgiyi aklımda böyle saklamıştım. Bu bilgi senelerce bu şekilde kaldı, ne zaman gökyüzünde bir uçak kuyruk izi görsem hava durumu ölçümü yapılıyor sanırdım. Bu iddia beni uçak kuyruk izlerinin nedenini araştırmaya itti, ve tamamen fizik bilgisine dayanan bir nedenden bu izlerin oluştuğunu öğrendim. Bu bilgiyi öğrendikten yıllar sonra da bu konuda bir belgesel fotoğraf çalışması yapmaya karar verdim.

Tabi izlerin kaybolması da havadaki rüzgara, güneşin ısısına göre değişiyor. Alçak irtifada veya kapalı havalarda bu izleri görme ihtimali nadirdir. As a child, I heard through hearsay that aircraft contrails in the sky were left by planes to measure the weather, and I kept the information that way. This belief remained this way for years; whenever I saw a plane contrail in the sky, I thought it was for a weather forecast. Seeing two or three of them side by side didn't motivate me to investigate or question the subject. You shouldn't give much credence to a hearsay. That is, until the myth spread after the Covid-19 pandemic. What was that myth? Gases are being pumped into the air to poison people. Humans are actually creating their own air pollution, but that's another story. This claim led me to investigate the cause of aircraft’s contrails, and I had learned that these trails occur for a reason based entirely on physics. Years after learning this information, I decided to make a documentary photography project on this subject.
Hot air from the engines of aircraft, especially those flying at high altitudes, encounters cold weather and freezes into crystals. Above 10,000 meters, temperatures can reach -50 degrees Celsius, and when exhaust gases from the engine suddenly freeze, they leave a white trail behind. This white contrail is essentially the freezing and crystallization of the aircraft's exhaust gases in the air. These trails can be thick or long, depending on the humidity level in the atmosphere where the aircraft is flying. Of course, the disappearance of these trails also depends on the wind and the temperature of the sun. It's rare to see these trails at low altitude or in overcast skies. If you see a plane's contrail, it's more likely an aircraft flying at high altitude. Who knows? The plane that left that contrail might be a scheduled flight to your dream tourist destination.
